Mill Race Basket Weaver's Guild
Meetings held monthly in Northville's quaint historical Mill Race Village.
The basket weavers meet at the Cady Inn. The salt-box style building is believed to have been a tavern and early stage coach stop. Local legend says the building served as a stopping point for the underground railroad prior to the Civil War.
The creed of the basket weavers is to preserve the ancient art of basketry, while incorporating traditional techniques. The Mill Race Basket Guild is not designed to make baskets for profit, although the guild participates in a few juried events sponsored by the Historical Society throughout the year.
From time to time the Guild will have a well known guest come to teach a workshop. Most months they take turns with the 'program' and being hostess. There is a short formal meeting each month. Prospective members are required to be juried into the Guild as experience is mandatory. The Mill Race Basket Guild has changed over the years but its Bylaws are respected, as is the ancient art of basket weaving.
-

Dues make you a member of the Bay Area Arts Association and entitles you to the use of the building, a quarterly newsletter and a discount on classes that the Association sponsors. - Weavers' Guild
of St. Louis
Guild Website
The guild is a not-for-profit group of contemporary textile artists. Founded in 1926, it is the second oldest fiber guild in the United States. Our membership ranges from the novice hobby weaver to the professional production weaver. The guild sponsors ongoing study groups in the areas such as spinning, tapestry weaving, knitting, color and dyeing, depending on the members' interests. Workshops and programs are scheduled each year to bring in fiber artists from outside the St. Louis area with expertise in color, design, weaving techniques, spinning, dyeing, basketry, and other subjects of interest to fiber folk. Guild members can sell and exhibit their work in the annual sale each fall. Proceeds from a special scholarship table at the sale support a fund used for educational purposes, such as full or partial scholarships for those interested in attending workshops and summer fiber schools as continuing education.
Membership in the guild helps pay for our meeting place, speakers, newsletters, yearbooks, library acquisitions, and other guild responsibilities. Dues for the guild year, which runs from June 1 through May 31, are payable at the April meeting. Membership forms can be printed from their website or can be requested from Jo Ann Treumann, 8326 Delcrest Dr., Apt. 3C, St. Louis, MO 63124.
The guild meets monthly (except June and July) usually on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in the Brentwood Community Center, Brentwood, Missouri. There is also a night meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Weaving Department in the Myers House, 180 Dunn Rd., Florissant, Missouri, usually the same day as the daytime guild meeting.
